Transit routes from Iran to Central Asia and Afghanistan: an overview

Afghanistan and the Central Asian republics have no coastline of their own. For much of their trade, the shortest way to open sea runs through Iran: south to the Persian Gulf, or north across the Caspian. This article outlines the main routes and what decides which one fits a shipment.

Two seas, two sets of ports

Persian Gulf. Ocean cargo arrives at Iran's southern ports, with Bandar Abbas the largest container gateway. From there it travels north and east by rail or by truck.

Caspian Sea. Iran's northern ports, such as Amirabad and Bandar Anzali, connect by sea with Aktau in Kazakhstan and Türkmenbaşy in Turkmenistan. Amirabad is also linked to the national railway, which makes sea–rail combinations possible.

Rail, road or sea?

There is no single best mode. The choice usually comes down to four questions:

  • What is the cargo? Bulk and heavy cargo favors rail; time-sensitive or door-to-door cargo favors trucks.
  • How much is there? A full block of wagons is priced very differently from a single container or a part load.
  • Where exactly is it going? A consignee next to a railway terminal and one far from the network need different plans.
  • How fixed is the deadline? Transit times vary with the season and with conditions at each border.

One technical point is worth knowing early: Iran's railway uses standard gauge (1,435 mm), while the railways of Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and their neighbors use broad gauge (1,520 mm). At the border stations, wagons change bogies or the cargo is transferred, and that step has to be planned and booked.

Planning a shipment

A forwarder's job is to put these pieces together: reserve capacity on each leg, prepare the transit documents, coordinate the transfer between modes and keep the cargo moving at the border. If you are planning a shipment on any of these routes, tell us about it and we will propose a route.
